This past December, Christopher Luxon hinted there is an issue with the “long” Kiwi holidays and said we’d do better without them as a country.
Without addressing the holiday issue head on, Luxon hinted:
“We’ve got a lot to sort out.”
And then lamented…..
“We’ve got to keep moving.”
Soon after former National Party leader Simon Bridges jumped on the advocacy bandwagon, saying too many Kiwis felt “entitled” to a long Summer holiday.
That was followed up by former NZME Political Editor cum National plant Jason Walls, who now features as 1News’ hapless and incompetent “business correspondent” . Walls did a value-minus segment on TVNZ questioning if shortening Kiwis’ holidays would enhance economic activity.
(Unsurprisingly, the people chose Walls to interview said yes, for the sake of our economy: Oh Lord, it would make sense to shorten the break!)
Look, I don’t lament anyone taking a good break, including and especially someone as thoroughly deceptive and incapable as our Prime Minister, but it is the hypocrisy here that is of note.
Rules for thee, but not for me.
It reminds me of when Tasman flooded last year, and was in a state of emergency, and Luxon went on a secret holiday to Hawaii (or was it Te Puke Hawaii)
Kiwis only found out Luxon was on holidays in July when he came back, swanning it up on his regular Newstalk ZB segments, where the host praised him for his fresh look while Luxon boasted that he had had a great time in Hawaii relaxing with his wife and reading books.
Luxon is on record as wanting to get rid of Matariki Day too, whining about its “economic cost” and suggesting it could be replaced by Labour Day.
He later confirmed he wouldn’t campaign on it for the 2024 election, but he and Paul Goldsmith eagerly cult Matariki funding by almost 50% as soon as they could.
What a great pair.
It’s not like I miss Luxon, and he does have 7 social media staff - partially taxpayer funded - to help him out (for example in pretending he’s in Te Puke when he’s overseas or that he’s at work), but let the man live his word for once.
Maybe just once?
